Why did Marguerite Johnson change her name to Maya Angelou?
Maya Angelou was a stage name she created when she was singing and dancing for a living in San Francisco. Maybe "Maya" was just a nickname for "Marguerite" and she just liked the exotic sound of "Angelou." (After all, she's a poet.)
