Has anyone read "The Lover" by Marguerite Duras?

I felt this novel to be engulfing and I struggled not to drown in her despair. What elements do you think she utilizes to effectively create such an environment? I know it wasn't empathy, but I can't pinpoint what it is. No, this isn't for a book report, I just love to talk book.

Has anyone read "The Lover" by Marguerite Duras?
Yes, and it is depressing but extremely well written. Maybe it's the stream of consciousness narrative, and switching between 1st and 3rd person, that makes this book really draw the reader in.
