Have you ever heard about Marguerite Yourcenar?
I've read some of the folk-fairy tales by Yourcenar and enjoyed them, although they have a bit of a negative edge, people having heads chopped off etc. In The Abyss there is sort of the sense of traveling from one town to the next, a kind of almost guidebook, but, again, with sort of an odd edge. The imagery is terrific but I haven't read Magie.
