I read this book as a sophomore in high school and I don't remember the 5th lesson! I remember the first four - with the Blue Man, the Captain, Marguerite, and Ruby. I know the fifth person was Tala, a little girl. But the lesson escapes me. For example, Ruby teaches Eddie he needs to learn to forgive. What was that fifth lesson? Thanks so much! :)
Have you read the book The Five People You Meet in Heaven?
Tala taught him to forgive himself and others, especially for things over which he had no control. By cleansing her from the burnt skin, he was also purifying himself and washing away the old scars from his past.
In a sense, she was a psychopomp (a guide to the other realm in Jungian psychology) who led him through death into eternal life. She was also a kind of mirror image since she, too, had suffered unjustly from things that were done to her. By 'healing' her at the river, he also healed himself.
Reply:i read it but i didnt think there was a lesson from tala? he helped her get rid of her scars by washing her with the rock. i remember when i was reading it i didnt see a clear lesson. but good luck!
Reply:i agree with Linda..... she was there to help you to forgive and move on.....
Reply:Was it forgiveness or maybe letting go? Wasn't she the little girl who got burned to death in the village they torched? The one he kept seeing out of the corner of his eye and felt guilty about?
Great book by the way!
